314Z November 11, 2024: Honoring America’s Veterans
Monday, 11:50—1:15, Nov. 11
One session
Instructor: Barbara Nelson
The instructor’s father was a fighter pilot in World War II, and since she was a little girl, she has respected the contribution of service members. In 1947, Navy veteran Raymond Weeks wrote a letter and personally delivered his petition to then Army Chief of Staff General Dwight Eisenhower to expand Armistice Day to include all American veterans of all wars. In 1954, President Eisenhower signed legislation that changed November 11 to Veterans Day and proclaimed it a national holiday. This class will discuss American heroes, beginning with World War II veterans—officers and enlisted, men and women— and discuss their service to our country.
Barbara Nelson, an OLLI member, taught for over 30 years at the secondary level, the last 20 at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. She has taught literature classes at OLLI, as well as art history classes that are based on National Portrait Gallery exhibits.
