F410 Winter 2019 Philip Pullman’s The Golden Compass

We will read and discuss The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. The first book in Pullman’s provocative and influential fantasy series His Dark Materials is an action­-packed yet deeply philosophical work. The class will explore Pullman’s life, the novel, and its place within fantasy literature. Students should read through at least chapter five in The Golden Compass to prepare for the first class.
Matthew Moffett is a librarian for Fairfax County Public Library. A long-time reader of fantasy, horror, and science fiction, his reviews have appeared in professional journals and mainstream publications. He has presented at professional conferences, fan conventions, and at OLLI on topics ranging from comic books to science fiction literature.
