If you’ve ever played Scrabble, completed a crossword puzzle, or been stymied by the final word in the National Spelling Bee, then this is the movie series for you. We’ll view four great films about people who are probably more obsessed with words than you are!
- June 20: Spellbound (2002): A documentary that follows eight teenagers on their quest to win the 1999 National Spelling Bee.
- June 27: Wordplay (2006): An in-depth look at The New York Times’ crossword puzzle editor, Will Shortz, and his loyal fans.
- July 11: Word Wars: Tiles and Tribulations on the Scrabble Circuit (2004): A documentary that examines the world of competitors obsessed with this classic word game.
- July 18: Akeelah and the Bee (2006): An entertaining and inspirational story about a young girl who aspires to win the National Spelling Bee and the English professor who coaches her.
is an OLLI member whose classes tend toward lighter subjects: sitcoms, comedians, and movies. She has presented dozens of movies at OLLI over the past five years and is always pleased to discover and share highly rated films that surprise and delight.
