660F From Gilbert and Sullivan to Damn Yankees: What Can We Do to be Hopeful in Our World?
One session
Instructor: Rabbi Bruce Aft
Coordinator: Velma Berkey
Wednesday, 9:40—11:05, Apr. 15
This session will inspire us with stories of kindness based upon the biblical scroll of Ruth. Why is it incumbent upon us to find meaningful ways to help others in today's world? As this description is being written, the government shutdown has impacted so many lives and we are witnessing the need for connecting with others and showing people that we care. We are taught by Rabbi Hillel in Jewish tradition that "If I am not for myself, who will be for me, if I am only for myself, what am I, and if not now when?" Now is the time...and hopefully things will be better by the time we meet, but the need for kindness is eternal.
Rabbi Bruce Aft is rabbi emeritus of Congregation Adat Reyim. He is a graduate of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Philadelphia and received an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree in 2006. He is an adjunct professor at George Mason University and visiting scholar at the Carter School.
