659Z  Anthropology of a Multicultural Nation, Part II

America was not discovered. It was created. Our national identity has evolved through seven eras of migration: Pre-Columbian; Colonial; Old Wave; New Wave; Great Migration, Restrictive; and Global. We will explore how immigration during each era has enriched our culture, built our communities, and stimulated our economy. Although immigration brings benefits, during each era immigrants have encountered nativism, xenophobia, and racism. We will consider the forces that drive this hostility, and we will explore the conditions that have enabled us to meet these challenges, as “We the People” build an inclusive, resilient nation.
