311F The Real "Hunt for Red October": Life on a Fast Attack Submarine during the Cold War
Four sessions
Instructor: Henry Rausch
Mondays, 11:50—1:15, Apr. 20—May 11
“There is no other force in our entire Defense establishment that contributed as much as the Submarine Force to the collapse of the Soviet Union”—Vice Admiral Bernard Kauderer. This course delves into the frightening and mysterious underwater world of nuclear fast-attack submarines as they hunted their prey in a black abyss during the darkest days of the Cold War. It is based on the author’s book, Submerged: Life on a Fast Attack Submarine in the Last Days of the Cold War, which was approved for public release by the DoD. No classified topics are covered, but even so, the subject will be interesting to anyone with an interest in technology, history, and political affairs.
Commander Henry Rausch, USNR (ret) served on two fast attack submarines in the 80s and 90s, conducting classified missions to the Barents Sea, North Atlantic, Mediterranean, and North Pole. Afterward, he left active service for the Reserves, where he served primarily in NATO command and control.
