706Z GMU Retired Faculty Association: Modern Ukraine History
One session
Instructor: Karina V. Korostelina
Coordinator: Julianne Mahler
Monday, 2:15—3:40, Oct. 27
This talk will address the complex, multilayered, and asymmetric nature of the conflict in Ukraine. The 2022 war complicated an already fragile peace process. It will explore why the Minsk peace agreements failed not only in addressing incompatibilities between the conflicting parties, but even in reaching an agreement between the parties on the nature of the conflict itself. The talk will discuss how the 2022-2025 peace negotiations or proposals for settlement addresses multiple issues such as the rights and integration of minorities, antagonistic histories, and strong social boundaries.
Karina V. Korostelina is a professor and a director of the Sustainable Peace Lab at the Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution, GMU. She is an establishing member and president of the International Association for Reconciliation Studies.
