1205 What is the Political South?
Friday, 1:00—2:30, Sept. 20
Fairfax
Instructor: Mark Rozell
The U.S. South, long considered culturally and politically distinctive, has undergone major demographic transformation since the 2000 census. This presentation will describe and analyze how the South has changed and then focus on the question of what exactly is "southern" anymore? Is Northern Virginia the South? What about West Texas, South Florida, and the research triangle? Should we include southern Illinois, West Virginia, Oklahoma, and southern Maryland?
Mark J. Rozell is dean of the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University. His latest co-written book is The Changing Political South: How Minorities and Women are Transforming the Region (Oxford University Press, 2024).
