According to a Gallup pool from 2022, 57% of Americans think that healthcare is the responsibility of the Federal Government. Most industrialized countries have some form of universal healthcare. These healthcare systems can be 100% publicly financed, 100% privately financed, or a combination of both. Can the U.S. design and develop a universal healthcare coverage system that is a combination of public and private financing? If so, what would be the pros and cons of such a system? How can the cons be overcome?

Stephen Quick is an OLLI member. He holds a PhD in Political Economy from Stanford University and has been staff director of the Congressional Joint Economic Committee, chief economist for the Senate Democratic Policy Committee, director of evaluation and oversight of the Inter-American Development Bank, and chief risk officer for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
