106Z  American Jazz: Five of the Greats

This course provides an in-depth look at the stories of five American jazz musicians: Duke Ellington, Mary Lou Williams, Thelonius Monk, Wayne Shorter, and Herbie Hancock. Their artistry, compositions, recordings, and contributions to the development of the art form will be explored. The careers of these musicians allow the course to examine significant segments of 100 years of jazz history. 
David Palmer is a music teacher, performer, and composer. Since moving to the DMV in 2020, he has worked as a piano teacher for children, as a church musician, and as an instructor for Wesley Seminary. He holds a Ph.D. in Music Theory from the Eastman School of Music and plays in several area bands.
