He created operas of immense drama, beauty, and emotional power; revolutionized classical music; and helped shape the sound of modern film scores. While some people assume Wagner’s operas are long, heavy, or difficult; his music can be thrilling, moving, and surprisingly accessible. This talk offers a lively and entertaining introduction to Wagner’s remarkable life and career, featuring numerous performance excerpts from his operas. Along the way, it will explore his larger-than-life personality, his groundbreaking musical ideas, and the lasting impact of his work on music, movies, and culture. Whether you are completely new to Wagner or already a fan, this presentation will provide fresh insights into one of history’s most fascinating musical figures.
Dan Sherman is an economist who lives in Alexandria and has been in the Washington area since earning his Doctorate from Cornell in 1985. Since 2010, Dan has taught courses to many groups on opera, musical theatre, and film. One of his first classes was on Wagner, which he taught at OLLI Mason in 2010.
