973 Winter 2019 Slavery, the Bible, and Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address
Tuesday, 9:40–11:05, Feb. 12
United Christian Parish, Reston
Instructor: Steve Goldman
This session is offered in recognition of President Abraham Lincoln's birthday. In his second inaugural address, Lincoln highlighted the irony that both the North and the South used the same Bible to declare their causes to be just. Who had the better case based on Biblical texts? How did Lincoln interpret the Bible and how did it influence his understanding of slavery and the Civil War? In this session, we will explore the answers to these questions and see how Lincoln crafted an elegant argument regarding the hand of God in human history.
