L110 Summer 2018 Two Great French Modernists: Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Boulez
Tuesday, 11:50–1:15, July 10
Instructor: Jon Goldberg
This lecture will explore the music and legacy of these two towering 20th-century French composers. Messiaen's music has achieved far greater acceptance in the concert hall than has the music of Boulez. However, Boulez's influence as a champion of modern music has left a more lasting legacy. Hopefully, you will leave the lecture with a greater appreciation of their music and a desire to explore it more.
Jon Goldberg holds a master’s degree in music from the Manhattan School of Music and teaches music theory at Northern Virginia Community College. He is founder and conductor of the Endymion Ensemble, an internationally-recognized chamber orchestra that has performed at Carnegie Recital Hall.
