313Z Fall 2026 The Soviet/German War: One Historian's 50-year Study

This course reviews the presenter's experiences in studying and researching the Soviet/German War of 1941-45, the largest and costliest land campaign of World War II. We will review the changing interpretations of that conflict over the past 50 years, especially with regard to the increased access to available source materials. Our class will thereby consider aspects of both the military campaign and subsequent controversies among historians. In so doing we may better understand the background to the breakup of the Soviet Union and the current Russian/Ukrainian war.

Timothy Mulligan earned his Master's and Ph.D. in History at the University of Maryland. For 34 years he served as an archivist at the National Archives and Records Administration, specializing in American military and captured German records. He is the author of three books and over 20 articles.
