1006E Fall 2026 Walking with Washington: A Journey Through Historic Pohick Church

Get an up-close look at George Washington’s historic Pohick Church, which he and fellow vestrymen George Mason and George William Fairfax built. Because of its proximity to the highest point of land in the area, the founding fathers chose the parish site to reflect the Biblical image of a “city upon a hill” that could not be hidden. Also known as the Mother Church of Northern Virginia, the parish is still active today and is located on Richmond Highway in Lorton. During colonial times, the church served as a place of worship and a social gathering for Washington and his family, as well as community members in the region. During the tour, a docent will discuss and point out the church’s architecture and its use during colonial times, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. You’ll have an opportunity to sit in the box pews where Washington and Mason, as well as other prominent members of the time, sat. A tour of the cemetery, including the oldest grave in Fairfax County, is included.
