812R Fall 2026 Depression in Older Adults: Diagnosis and Treatment

This class will cover the diagnosis of clinical depression, the different types of depression, and the causes of depression, including the special circumstances of how depression relates to loneliness, bereavement, and dementia.  We will then discuss pharmacologic, psychotherapeutic, and other treatments for depression. In addition, we will address the difference between clinical depression and "normal human misery”.  Class discussion will be encouraged as time allows.

Dr. Jonathan Bauman is a board-certified general psychiatrist who treated adolescent and adult patients for 42 years until retiring in 2019. He is a graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Georgetown in 1977. He is a life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
