Forget everything you know about Monopoly and Scrabble! Board games have undergone a massive "glow-up" in the last 30 years, becoming more beautiful, engaging, and easy to learn than ever. In this course, we’ll dive into the world of modern tabletop gaming. You’ll discover why board games are the ultimate "brain gym"—helping to keep your mind sharp and stress levels low—while providing a wonderful way to connect with new friends. We’ll skip the dry rules and get straight to the fun. Each session includes a hands-on "Learn & Play" segment where we’ll walk you through popular new titles step-by-step. The Learn & Play segment will lead into our weekly Board Game Club meeting if you would like to stick around. We’ll also show you how to find games for free at your local library, play online with people around the world, and most importantly, how to join our vibrant OLLI board game community. Come play with us!
Tim Harwarth is a recent retiree from the federal government. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Minnesota and a Master’s degree in Defense Policy from George Washington University. He has been playing and teaching board games of various types for over 50 years.
Melissa Emery recently retired as a principal systems engineer from MITRE. She holds a Master's in Computer Science from the University of West Florida and Software Systems Engineering from GMU. Melissa is passionate about board games, both playing and teaching others to enjoy this engaging hobby.
