In this engaging author talk, suspense novelist Melinda Crocker shares her journey to becoming a published writer and the creative process behind crafting compelling mystery stories. Participants will learn how a simple idea can grow into a full novel, using examples from her latest book, Behind Closed Lies. Crocker discusses where story ideas come from, how writers develop believable characters, and why character growth—known as a character arc—is essential to keeping readers invested. She will also explore two common approaches to writing: planning with an outline versus “writing by the seat of your pants,” and explain how she blends the two methods in her own work. Through examples from her novels and insights from her publishing experience, students will gain a clearer understanding of how stories are built from concept to finished book. The session concludes with an interactive Q&A where participants can ask questions about writing, publishing, and the creative process.
