415F Fall 2026 Why 1984 Still Matters: Revisiting Orwell in Modern America

George Orwell’s 1984 remains one of the most important novels of the 20th century. In this course, we will revisit key passages and themes—such as surveillance, language, truth, and individual freedom—and consider how they resonate today. Through guided discussion, short readings, and selected video clips, participants will explore connections between Orwell’s fictional world and contemporary American life. In a welcoming and engaging setting of thoughtful conversation, this course emphasizes inquiry over conclusion, inviting multiple perspectives in a respectful, nonpartisan setting.

Ron Shapiro, an award-winning teacher, has published over 20 poems in publications including Nova Bards 24 & 25, Virginia Writers Project, The New Verse News, Poetry X Hunger, Gezer Kibbutz Gallery and Paper Cranes Literary magazine. Understory is his book of published nature poetry.
