In this course to be continued in spring 2027, we explore how music transforms great films into unforgettable experiences. This is not film school but rather a celebration for film and music lovers who want to understand how music shapes story, mood, and character. Film scores aren’t just background, they’re the emotional engine of a movie. Through iconic scenes and soundtracks, we’ll uncover how scores and songs work together to drive narrative, define character, and capture cultural moments. From the groundbreaking The Jazz Singer (1927) to modern classics, we trace the evolution of film music and spotlight legendary composers. These include Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Elmer Bernstein, Henry Mancini, Justin Hurwitz, John Williams, Miles Davis, Lalo Schifrin, and Quincy Jones—spanning classic Hollywood to today across drama, romance, comedy, adventure, and film noir. We close with a special focus on film noir and the unmistakable role of jazz in shaping mood, tension, and cinematic cool.
Mike Agron is a music aficionado raised in LA’s entertainment scene and who now lives in Sacramento, CA. He’s a former high-tech executive and entrepreneur turned storyteller. Mike creates engaging multimedia seminars on music and film and has led hundreds of seminars for the Sacramento Renaissance Society, multiple OLLIs nationwide and Osher Online. He returns to OLLI Mason for his fifth series.
