101F Fall 2026 Knitting 101

This is a beginners’ class for non-knitters. You will learn the basics of knitting, including the knit and purl stitches, tools of the trade, how to read a pattern and a yarn label, and the ins-and-outs of choosing a pattern and its appropriate yarn. You will be provided with some yarn and needles for a short practice project, which you will work on over the course of the class and, hopefully, at home. Before you are turned loose on the world of knitting, you will be provided with a short list of the instructors’ favorite resources for finding patterns, yarn, and advice. 

Doris Bloch has been a dedicated knitter and yarn hoarder for many years. Her preferred KOs (knitted objects) are simple scarves and an occasional hat, which she consistently produces for friends, family, and complete strangers, whether they like it or not. She has previously taught Knitting 101 and is back by popular demand to teach others the joy of making things with long stringy bits and pointed sticks.

Jean Jewell has been a fiber-head since childhood. Starting with the 70s macramé craze, moving on through rug-making and crocheting, Jean settled on knitting about 30 years ago. She has an obsession with wool and learned how to spin her own yarn in order to enable her knitting and fiber addiction. She also has knitted with wire, fabric, and steel wool, none of which she recommends.
